85-Year-Old Saigon Man Bootstraps His Way Across Vietnam

Nguyễn Văn Ngọc, an 91-year-old man from Ward 26 in Bình Thạnh District is known among his neighbors as a shoe repairman and part-time fortuneteller. Little do they know that at the ripe old age of 85, he traveled solo across the entirety of Vietnam on his trusty Honda 50 motorbike.

For Ngọc, the trip was a dreamed differed, one that he had been planning since he was a teenager. But it wasn’t until after working hard for decades and raising a family that the time was right for the journey of a lifetime.

One morning in 2008, he packed some clothes, food, a camera and a journal before departing on his cross-country ride.
