CALIPH8

Caliph8, a.k.a. Arvin Nogueras, is an electronic musician, dj, graffiti artist, and MC.

Since 1995, he has been active in the music scene, the local hip-hop culture in particular. A graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, his interests and activities also extend to the visual arts—celebrating hip-hop culture traditions by merging his influences with other art forms.

As a visual artist, he is rooted in graffiti. He’s influenced by the different visuals fronted on vinyl record sleeves which come from different eras --taking different cues from all these, he combines them using his current aesthetic sensibilities that lean toward the Hip hop realm.

He's a vinyl collector and has a background in true school hip-hop, folk, sound art, break beats, rare grooves, exotica, kraut rock, jazz, electro-acoustic and psychedelia. He deploys an arsenal of beats, one-note samples and deconstructed audio cut and paste sound collage. He delves into "Plunderphonics" which is music made by taking one or more existing audio recordings and altering them in some way to make a new composition.

He merges his graffiti and music sensibilities in exploring his visual media—video, new media, painting and installations, and has been doing live film scoring in the past five years. He recently was part of a groupshow at Picasso gallery. He contributed a 3 part video installation called “Summed Signals” which is deals with 2 focal ideas “Summing” and “Sampling” connecting a a homespun philosophy about being influenced by the past and how one can currently deconstruct and recontextualize these ideas into a disoriented pulse of audio-visual clutter.

Arvin has worked with The Gothé Institut, Alliance Française, The Italian, Embassy, Green Papaya Arts Project, Pablo Gallery, Transitopia, LO/FTF Council (Denmark), AMPON, Expansions, Antidote and The Shelter Shanghai, E.X.I.S.T. , White Noise Records, Hong Kong.

He has also done live film scoring excursions such as Golem with Drip, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (in collaboration with electronica duo Rubber Inc and Blums Borres), the 1926 animated silent film Die Abenteur des Prinzen Achmed (The Adventures of Prince Achmed) for the Goethe Institut with Drip, the 1914 Italian silent film, Cabiria, Mechanical Man and Assunta Aspina for the Italian Embassy in Manila.

Caliph8 has also performed for the National Commission for the Arts and Culture ( Philippines ), He collaborated with Tad Ermitano, Malek Lopez and Tzadik records’ Chris Brown (Sound Art) for a tribute performance called “Transmissions’ for Jose Maceda, with the “Ugnayan” piece in particular.

He has also worked with Subculture Shanghai, Antidote (Beijing & Shanghai), Germany ’s The Teichmann Brothers and recently The GasLampKiller from Los Angeles and Yusuke Hama from Oilworks Japan and Eastern Developments Music (Prefuse 73’s label).

He is a founding member of the leftfield hip-hop collective A.M.P.O.N., He also works with Minister Zero in the monthly vinyl excursion called Expansions Now.

He also curates a monthly performance called Subflex at B-Side ( Manila ).

Caliph8's latest album "Stillborn Etudes" through Dub Temple Records is a fourteen track masterpiece of psychedelic future mpc jazz which shows the depth, complexity, and talent of one the Greats of Filipino Hip Hop.
