Movie Night: Koyaanisqatsi @ Yoko Cafe

From the organizer: Koyaanisqatsi is a movie about nature, humans and the relationship between them. As the title is an Indian Hopi word meaning “life out of balance”, the film explores modern life, its absurdities, monotonies, beauties, and how technology became our milieu.

More than just being a documenting movie about the environment or technology, Koyaanisqatsi is an experience in itself. For six years, Godfrey Reggio (director) and Ron Fricke (photography) travelled across the US looking for the most original shots of natural and urban scenes. It resulted in a visual bomb. Visual and musical: the scores, an original composition of mythical Philip Glass, sets the rhythm and embarks you on one of the most intense hour and half long journeys. A journey, that’s what Reggio wanted it to be; a journey where the absence of narration lets Koyaanisqatsi be “whatever you wish to make of it.”
