Nguyen Hue Street Promenade To Block Traffic With "Smart Pillars," Reopen By Tet

Nguyen Hue Street, currently closed down for the constriction of a pedestrian promenade, will not be completely closed to traffic when it opens next year, according to city authorities.

Nguyen Huu Tin, vice chairman of the city government told VN Express that vehicles will be able access the street at certain times of day as not to inconveniences businesses and office workers.

Instead of relying on signs to keep the area free from motorbikes and cars like in Hanoi, the street will feature sets of “smart pillars” which will automatically raise at certain times of day, blocking vehicle access.

The Nguyen Hue phase of the $20.2 million master plan which will eventually connect downtown to Thu Thiem is scheduled to be completed by February 2015 in order to coincide with the Lunar New Year festival.

To make up for the loss of street parking, the city is pushing forward with 5 underground parking lots located at September 23rd Park, on Ton Duc Thang Street, at Le Van Tam Park and at Trong Dong Theater on Nguyen Du Street.

Plans have been in the works for a $100 million parking lot under at Le Van Tam Park for over 4 years, but the project has been in a state of limbo due to red tape.
