Saigon Restaurant Buys Up Endangered Carps Weighing 240kg

To satiation the gargantuan appetites of its customers, a Saigon restaurant recently bought two endangered giant carps that weighed in at 240kg.

The duo, caught in the Mekong River was comprised of a black and red giant carp, with weights of 130kg and 110kg, respectively, according to VietnamNet.

While the sale price was not disclosed, a single giant carp of a similar weight (128kg) sold for US$8,000 in Saigon last December. While the two carps mentioned above look staggering in size (the red carp was 1.5 meters long, while the black carp came in at 1.3 meters) the largest recently sold in Saigon was (amazingly) caught in the waters of the Dong Nai River in District 9.

The Siamese giant carp can only be found in the Mae Klong, Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins and is “critically endangered” due to overfishing and habitat loss.
