With the Lunar New Year right around the corner, everyone is eyeing those bright red lì xì envelopes in hopes of a nice year-end holiday bonus.
But depending on where you live, your envelope may or may not contain the Tet surprise you've hoped for. According to a recent survey by Vietnam's Labor Ministry, holiday bonuses across the country ranged from VND40,000 to VND624 million (US$27,800) this year, reports Thanh Nien.
The lowest recorded bonus, VND40,000, was gifted to a worker in Binh Phuoc province, while one lucky employee in Hai Duong province took home that VND624 million.
Elsewhere in the country, Hanoians received anywhere from VND450,000 to VND100 million (US$4,463), while Saigon really brought home the bacon. Tet bonuses in the southern hub ranged from VND3.09 million on the lower end to as much as VND600 million (US$26,778). In Vietnam's two largest cities, all recorded bonuses from the survey were paid by foreign-invested companies.
Overall, the average Tet bonus rose 15.7% from the previous year, bringing this year's median to VND5.53 million per employee. The Labor Ministry's survey questioned 13,178 businesses, reaching a total number of 2.4 million workers.
