Sơn Tùng Documentary to Premiere Worldwide on Netflix Tomorrow

The documentary chronicling the pop star's mega-successful 2019 Vietnam tour will be available to viewers in 190 countries.

The Sơn Tùng project, titled Sky Tour Movie, is the first Vietnamese musical documentary, according to VnExpress. The movie will feature subtitles in 10 languages. When it debuted in theaters this past June across Vietnam, it sold 10,000 tickets in 48 hours and earned VND5.5 billion in three days.

Regarding his tour documentary, the Snoop Dog collaborator from Thai Binh explained: “I decided to release the SKY TOUR MOVIE on Netflix to bring my music closer to more audiences worldwide. It’s also a great opportunity for fans who couldn’t catch the concert live in action or at the theatres earlier this year, a chance to relive this musical spectacle — anytime, anywhere.”

The title card of the movie in several languages.

Sky Tour Movie was praised for its professional production, polished musical performances and smooth storytelling. However, some critics were disappointed that the documentary is too conservative in showcasing different facets of Sơn Tùng as a pop icon, other than his success and talent.

"Son Tung’s music transcends borders. His artistry resonates with not only fans in Vietnam, but other markets beyond Southeast Asia," Raphael Phang, Netflix's Southeast Asia content acquisition manager, said in a statement. "While millions of adoring fans in Vietnam and beyond have enjoyed his music, Netflix is delighted to be given the opportunity to help make his relationship with fans more intimate by making this musical documentary available in 190 countries worldwide."

While Sơn Tùng M-TP is the first Vietnamese artist to release a musical documentary on Netflix, the streaming platform already has a sizable archive of similar features about musical artists, including Homecoming (Beyoncé), Amy (Amy Winehouse), Chasing Trane (John Coltrane) and Miss Americana (Taylor Swift).
