Quán Bụi Group Offers Lessons on Perseverance and Success

The restaurant business is fickle to the point of a well-known unattributed business truism: "How do you make a small fortune in the restaurant business? Start with a large one." So when a restaurant not only survives but spawns multiple outlets and brands, it’s all the more impressive. This is the case with Quán Bụi Group, a collection of Vietnamese and Thai eateries and cafes which, like many enduring brands, started as a story of rising from failure.

In 2009, Danh Trần took notice of the popular Bobby Brewers café, an eatery with a hodgepodge Western menu, and had the opportunity to acquire it. Over the next two years, Danh studied how people gathered and used the space. But when his lease was up, the model wasn’t living up to his expectations, especially with many other similar concepts in the market and he decided to close it.

Reflecting on this first foray into F&B, and with the desire to stay in the industry, Danh tried to devise something that he felt Saigon needed but was lacking. His explorations led him to something familiar.

In September 2011, Danh opened a Vietnamese restaurant, Quán Bụi, on a small street in Tân Định. It was humble, serving set menus to office workers. There, he identified what would become the core elements of the many Quán Bụis to come: home cooking, Vietnamese comfort food, and a meal that imparted meaning beyond the sum of its ingredients.

Two years later, Danh further refined the concept, and a refined version opened as an à la carte format on Ngô Văn Năm that remains to this day. The timing was fortuitous, as Vietnamese dining habits were evolving alongside the arrival of global chains. A customer base had emerged that wanted local flavors made with high-quality ingredients served in more sophisticated yet authentic settings.

At Quán Bụi, Danh found a way to express inherent Vietnamese culture through dining experiences. He believes that a major reason for the restaurant's success is that it provides a space for diners to find comfort in tradition as a juxtaposition to their busy city lives.

It seems like this has resonated with Saigon’s restaurant goers as there are now nine Quán Bụi locations operating across the city. Amidst this expansion, Danh strives to ensure that each outlet maintains a continuity of concept from service to food.

The methods of achieving consistency underpin Danh’s subsequent creations. Having found the ingredients for success at Quán Bụi, Danh began to explore other concepts, launching Laang Saigon in 2019 which serves modern Vietnamese and Asian dishes.

Soon after Laang Saigon came Sicky Rice, a Thai restaurant where Danh applied the successful attributes of comfort and reliability to a neighboring cuisine.

Finally, Café’In focuses on restive settings to enjoy coffee, tea, juices, and freshly baked cakes, popular with remote workers and groups of friends. While serving a smaller menu than the other restaurants, consistency remains a key to its popularity.

The common threads of clear conceptualization and commitment to meeting customers’ lofty expectations are most apparent when viewed side by side. Recently, Quán Bụi, Sicky Rice and Café’In can be found under one roof at the newly opened Quán Bụi Group Complex in An Khanh.

Success for Danh and Quán Bụi Group was not linear. Like many businesses, the Covid-19 pandemic plunged his operations into disarray, and he was forced to confront uncertainty. He told Saigoneer that to endure, he drew strength from Vietnam’s long history of resilience and was able to restart operations once the pandemic subsided.

Today, after 15 years of opening the first Quán Bụi, Danh is not complacent, nor is he one to sit behind a desk and manage from afar. When Saigoneer met him in the months preceding the opening of Quán Bụi Group Complex, he periodically checked his phone, making sure the right tiles arrived for the flooring and other elements of construction were on track. The trials and tribulations of his journey stay at the forefront of his mind and he still has an active role in nearly every part of his business. The impact of such dedication is something customers will undoubtedly notice when visiting any of his locations.

From Dark to Dawn, an Early Morning at Duy Hải Fish Market

At 3 am, Hoi An’s streets resemble dog-gnawed pork bones, licked clean of all scent and viscera. No light, no noise, no movement. But that’s the time you must venture out to witness the Duy Hải Fish Market in action.

After you cross the Cửa Đại Bridge leading away from Old Town, you’ll turn into a warren of homes and notice the first signs of activity. A few motorbikes rumble in the distance, some homes have lights on, and finally, on the tiny streets that lead to the water, small restaurants and coffee shops emerge, brightly lit against the lampblack dark. In a simple wooden-walled shop playing bolero, middle-aged men slap playing cards onto plastic tables filled with phin filters and drinking glasses. Their workdays are already over and it is time to relax now that they are back on firm ground. At the docks, women are just beginning to work as sanguine light clots on the horizon.

A fish market is a testament to the messiness of making things work. All-purpose plastic bins and baskets fill with fish, the mucus-slick scales shimmering on the cement like dropped costume jewelry. Women weigh, sort and separate the catch before selling them to the wholesalers who will take them into town for use in restaurants and grocery stores. These are family operations: the women work in concert with their fathers, husbands or brothers who steer the boats towards the dock. This is not a place for fashion. Mismatched pajamas. Stained sweatshirts and tattered hats are the ad hoc uniforms for those crouching in knee-high rubber boats, occasionally splashed by the water seemingly trickling everywhere. Fish blood and exhaust linger in the air.

While removed from the immediate action, the commotion is no less intense on the water. Duy Hải’s handful of docks service a good number of boats coming in from the sea, and smooth coordination is required to bring them in efficiently and without collision. The conventions governing the order and procedure of their arrivals is beyond outsiders, instead it operates with a mysterious mathematics not unlike the currents themselves: we don’t understand it, but we trust it.

Frayed and tangled nets with stained floats and bobbers pile on the boat decks. Weather-battered wood boasts brightly colored, peeling paint; the familiar eyes at the front are chipped and fading. A sluice of salty muck, algae, oil, and sweat lay a damp sheen to every surface. Only the ocean surface below or the cloud cover above hints at purification, some clean future; a hot shower, and the clear broth the catch will accompany

As six am nears, there is little end to difficult work to be done, but the daylight ushers in a new hazard: tourists. With matching paint jobs and helmets,, motorbikes near the dock, and camera-gripping visitors descend on the scene. The men transferring fish to shore, and the woman shouting prices and preferences to eachother must now be mindful of the interlopers. Duy Hải, like many sites of traditional activity, has now become a spectacle for foreigners and locals alike. It’s a good time to depart. And looking back from the bridge, the chaos imperceptible, a hint òf the day’s heat already draped on the mountains in the distance, we are reminded of the peculiar, frail shuffling our species does along the hem of the great oceans.

After several years of preparation, Vietnam Tinh Hoa (VNTH) has achieved recognition as an IB World School, joining a global network of over 5,700 schools worldwide.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a global standard in education that helps students attain the tools and skills to excel throughout their lives. The program is an integral part of VNTH’s entire approach to education, which includes academic rigor supported by North London Collegiate School International and prioritizes Vietnamese identity via language and culture.

To better understand how VNTH integrates the IB curriculum and its impact on the school’s philosophy of placing students at the center of learning while fostering critical thinking, curiosity, and a global mindset, Benjamin Brown, Deputy Head of Academics at VNTH, spoke with Saigoneer over email.

Introducing the IB System to Saigon Families

“Many families understand the concept of academic excellence, but not necessarily the philosophy behind the IB,” Ben notes. “So we start by explaining the 'why' before the ‘what.’ The IB nurtures independent thinkers, confident communicators and compassionate global citizens.” Indeed, while the IB Diploma awarded to students serves as proof of a mastery of subjects including the English language and critical thinking skills for university admissions offices around the world, that isn’t the entire point. The IB curriculum develops each student to be a multi-talented individual who values their ability to contribute to the communities around them.

Introducing the IB system is an exciting opportunity to strengthen the connections between families and VNTH. The school hosts parent workshops, open classrooms, bilingual communications, and one-to-one meetings so families can be active participants in the learning journey. “Most popular has been our ‘Window into Learning’ where parents received an introduction about inquiry-based learning by myself, and then got to sit in their child’s class and see it in action,” Ben shares.

The Role of English Rigor via North London Collegiate School

VNTH benefits from its profound relationship with North London Collegiate School (NLCS), which is a world-class IB Family of schools with 175 years of exceptional education in the UK, Korea, Dubai, Singapore and Kobe. NLCS provides support for implementing a curriculum framework that meets all the requirements of the National Curriculum for England and scaffolds the IB. The rigor and structure provided by NLCS’s formal standards balance the IB system’s more holistic and difficult to assess inquiry-based learning methods.

Ben is particularly well-suited to implement NLCS’s philosophies and standards for excellence throughout the school. A founding member of NLCS Jeju, he spent six years establishing a culture of academic rigor and high expectations. After time at Nord Anglia schools in Saigon and Guangzhou, he arrived at VNTH with a wealth of experience. “I came to VNTH because it offered a rare opportunity to help shape a young school with strong values and enormous potential. My focus is on building solid curriculum and assessment systems, raising academic standards, and ensuring every student is challenged, supported, and known as an individual. I want VNTH to become a place where rigorous learning, bilingual strength, and a warm community come together to give students the very best start,” he says.

Maintaining Vietnamese Identity

VNTH graduates will go on to exciting opportunities around the world, but they must do so without ever losing connection with their home and culture. A key component of this is Vietnamese fluency, which is developed naturally and mindfully in coordination with the IB and English curriculum. It may at first seem that achieving bilingual fluency while also pursuing the rigorous English curriculum requirements and IB system presents an overwhelming task, but it’s not only possible, but preferable. As Ben explains: “Bilingualism is an asset, not an obstacle.”

”The IB PYP values mother-tongue development because it strengthens cognitive growth, identity, and academic achievement. Vietnamese at VNTH is not simply a subject; it is a living language in the school, reflected in literature, cultural experiences, and classroom practice,” Ben continues. “Students learn to think, problem solve, and express themselves in both English and Vietnamese, giving them cognitive flexibility, stronger literacy skills, and a deeper connection to their heritage. This is an advantage unique to VNTH’s context.”

Achieving all the Vietnamese language and knowledge standards of students who attend local public schools has a profound impact on their ability to maintain ties to their communities. They can communicate fully and connect deeply with family members, friends, and neighbor,s which enables them to feel a part of their local communities.

Putting it All Together

Vietnam’s national curriculum, the English national curriculum, and the IB’s required interdisciplinary units can complement one another when designed and delivered carefully. Thanks in part to Ben’s significant experience with the programs, the best of all worlds can be blended.

For this blending to occur, NLCS’s teachers and leadership work together closely. “A key strength of our model is the partnership between Western and Vietnamese teachers,” Ben explains. ”Planning is done collaboratively. Teachers co-design units, share expertise, and align instructional approaches so that the learning experience is coherent across languages and subjects. Western teachers bring international pedagogical approaches and inquiry-led methodology, while Vietnamese teachers bring cultural insight and language expertise.” When it succeeds, students develop learning approaches that are both internationally minded and deeply connected to Vietnamese culture. Small class sizes and modern, purpose-built facilities, including the STEAM Lab, Makerspace, Art Studio, and Science Lab, assist in offering authentic learning opportunities.

The IB program, like the focus on Vietnamese language and culture, is intended for every student’s lifelong benefit as leaders, thinkers, and contributors. Ben says: “We want families to know that our goal is long-term: to help children grow as thinkers, collaborators and leaders, confident in who they are and prepared for the world they will inherit.”

When Rush Hour Hits, The Straits Offers a Singaporean Alternative

Saigon’s streets snarl with hot, sticky knots of traffic every evening. As people finish their workdays and look ahead to quality time with families at home, precious hours pursuing hobbies and meeting with friends around the city, they must first contend with horrific congestion. This rush hour period, when movement is slow and frustrating, coincides with peak skyline beauty.

Instead of tedious hours in the back of a car or clutching handlebars, wouldn’t you rather have a panoramic view of the skyline as it’s drizzled with dusk colors? Sunset should be savored, peacefully, ideally with a refreshing drink and tasty snack in reach. On the 28th floor of Saigon Centre, Sedona Suites offers just this experience in the recently redesigned The Straits Kitchen and Bar.

The Straits sprawls out in front of you as you exit the elevator, the spacious room expanding to floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the Saigon River in one direction and past Landmark 81 and the seemingly endless scramble of development that constitutes central Saigon in the other. Plush couches invite you to rest, recline, and meet with friends in what could be the day’s first moment of true relaxation. In the center of the room are similarly comfortable chairs around tables with The Straits’ sleek, brightly lit bar behind.

A Singapore Sling may be the most obvious drink to order upon your arrival. The glowing orange gin-based drink with a tropical profile not only matches the sunset, but is in line with The Straits’ identity as a Singaporean restaurant. While the cocktail’s precise origins are debated and the original recipe uncertain, the namesake beverage was first enjoyed in the now-city-state more than 100 years ago.

While less directly tied to Singapore specifically, The Stratis’ signature cocktails capture the nation’s sunny disposition and abundance of fruit. The Straits Side contains vodka, Midori, lemongrass, and pomelo syrup, and the Tropical Frozen Margarita offers fresh mango and passionfruit juice, while the star ingredient of the Guava Martini is self-evident. These adventurous drinks are joined by classic cocktails as well as local beer, mocktails, smoothies, and soft drinks. If you need a refreshing pick-up and will be driving home, Saigoneer recommends the coconut coffee, which contains not just fresh coconut juice and flesh but an invigorating splash of pandan syrup for a special twist.

It’s never a good idea to drink on an empty stomach, and after a full day in the city, whether working, shopping, or sightseeing, a snack is a welcome sundown accompaniment. Served from 10 until 10, The Straits bar bites include international standards such as charcuterie platter, spiced cashews, and crudites alongside some Singaporean items. Har cheong gai, crunchy, mid-joint chicken wings with prawn paste batter and spicy dipping sauce, is an easy favorite as is the soft shell crab gau bao.

The Straits is a perfect post-work place to gather with friends and co-workers to wait out the rush, but once you’ve sat down and smelled the wonderful dishes being served, you might decide to stay for dinner. The menu, frequently assessed and enthusiastically approved by Sedona’s Singaporean owners for its authenticity, gives diners a thoughtful introduction to some of the nation’s most cherished dishes. The char kway teow, for example, underscores how cuisine is the result of time, place, and tradition. Working-class members of immigrant communities married their traditional flat rice noodles with the abundant seafood of the region. The resulting wok-fried dish is a harmonious medley of prawns, cockles, Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, and garlic.

Singaporean cuisine’s commitment to flexible balance is evident in the laksa. Its rich, creamy coconut broth depends on which locally available spices and herbs are available, as well as the preferences of the chef. Similarly, the hor fun is a whole that's even greater than its beef or seafood, vegetables, and Peranakan sauce parts. And of course, the chicken and rice that started as a humble way to make the best use of the finest breed of chickens and now graces Michelin Guide books must be present.

If you squint, the shimmering tail of water flowing between Saigon skyscrapers resembles the strait running along Singapore. Given that and the two metropolises’ proximity, it’s rather shocking that Saigon has so few Singaporean restaurants that cater to discerning tastes in a refined atmosphere. But not only does The Straits meet those needs, offering a plate of mee siam or nasi lemak in a relaxed dining room, it also provides an elevated oasis of cool comfort. Far above the 5 pm chaos, it’s a perfect place to watch the afternoon slip into evening and a dignified serenity fill your mind.

Fun, Happiness, and Parental Involvement are Essential to ISSP’s Approach to Holistic Development

“When I first entered ISSP, the staff and the teachers were very warm and engaged. They're very responsive to my child's needs. After the model class, she was just very happy!” exclaims Nina, the mother of 2-year-old Amari. The preschool model class allowed Nina to witness how International School Saigon Pearl (ISSP) balances traditional concepts of academic growth with opportunities to develop skills and dreams as part of a holistic education that relies on close relationships and communication with families alongside meticulously designed learning programs.

Nina and her husband both teach at esteemed international schools in Saigon and thus understand the importance of their child’s early educational foundation. When deciding where to enroll her, they visited five different schools. “The most important aspect that we were looking for with my daughter was her developing her social and emotional skills. My husband and I are not after only academic excellence … we don't want to put pressure on our child. We focus more on the social and emotional skills of our daughter. Every day when she comes home from school, she is very happy.”

Nina says ISSP’s emphasis on understanding and expressing emotions has led to noticeable growth. “Amari has improved a lot because I can see that she can manage her emotions very well. She can express her thoughts and feelings. She can say if she's happy, she's sad, she's a bit discouraged or embarrassed.”

In addition to fostering this unquantifiable sense of happiness, Nina says she sought a school with a high teacher-to-student ratio that would ensure Amari was receiving personal attention and her particular development needs were being attended to as communicated by the school.

Playing games and doing creative activities are important elements of holistic growth at ISSP.

Amari’s positive experiences and social-emotional development at the school are by careful design. From values to curriculum to parent communication, every element of the ISSP curriculum is carefully orchestrated to ensure the children grow as balanced, healthy, and confident individuals. Students are prepared not just for their next years of school but to be internationally-minded, respectful members of the community who are confident, independent lifelong learners. “The more they feel balanced, the more they feel confident. And when people are confident, they'll be prepared to take a risk with their learning and thus learn,” summarizes Jason Barton, the school’s Director of Learning and Teaching / IB PYP Coordinator.

A key component of whole-child development is instilling an action-oriented mindset. This quality, in particular, is embedded in the school’s curriculum which follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). It is designed around six themes that support 6-8 week-long Units of Inquiry that introduce students to skills that they can put into practice.

For example, Jason says teachers look at the World Economic Forum’s frequently updated list of top skills required for people in the future when designing classroom activities to ensure the students are developing for the future.

At ISSP, every element of the curriculum is carefully coordinated to ensure that students develop holistically.

Developing for the future should be fun. ISSP’s Early Years Coordinator, Alpha Butil, uses the popular helicopter stories activity to explain. Teachers read a story to the students who then re-tell it, or add their own prompted twist on it before acting it out as a group.

To the kids, it feels no different than playing a game, but they are in fact actively honing creative and critical thinking skills while collaboratively problem-solving. While the students are having fun with the lessons, the teachers are monitoring their development to refine future activities and communicate with parents. “We are always observing the children's interests and skills to support them and develop their social-emotional skills,” Alpha says. Teachers take notes and gather data that they share amongst themselves to assess each student using a shared language engrained in the PYP. Jason adds that this information allows them to look at the children and ask “who are they and are we meeting their needs? Are they growing? Are they developing?”

Teachers are able to observe and respond to each student in part because of the school’s small size. Likening it to the difference between living in a small country town and a big city, Jason says students at ISSP are not liable to get lost in the crowd. The high teacher-to-student ratio also allows teachers to communicate robustly with parents. Using the Toddle app, teachers share photos, videos, and notes about classroom activities so families can take an active role in their children’s educational journeys and support classroom lessons. Meanwhile, frequent formal and informal opportunities to meet promote discussions of any issues or aspirations while building close relationships.

ISSP builds a community between families and the school through various celebrations, providing opportunities for parents to come to ISSP and witness firsthand how the school fosters the holistic development of their children.

For example, parents participate in parent-teacher conferences, student-led conferences, and direct appointments to better understand the ISSP curriculum, examine milestones and development, and devise actionable plans to address specific needs. Alternatively, when parents drop off and pick up students, they not only get to see the artwork, projects, and games that fill their children’s days but can speak more with the teachers, casually getting to know one another better. Nina notes that recently these pick-ups involve Amari announcing she isn’t ready to go home yet; she wants to stay and continue playing.

A special component of ISSP’s approach to building community amongst families and the school are the regular Celebrations of Learning. Taking numerous forms including the annual Bazaar and monthly assemblies, they provide further opportunities for parents to come to ISSP and see firsthand how the school fosters holistic development while providing students further opportunities to put their skills into action. Similarly, community events such as Teachers’ Appreciation Day and Families Film Night focus on having fun and building the warm, comfortable environment that allows students to feel safe to take action, make mistakes, be themselves and learn.

If Amari is happy, Nina is happy.

After espousing the virtues of ISSP including the dedicated teachers and carefully designed classroom activities, Nina is asked to reflect on the type of person she hopes that Amari grows up to be. “Happy,” she answers simply. “I want her to be a happy child because that lays the foundation for her overall, well-being, and success in life. if she's happy, I know for sure that she will succeed in life.”

Grammy-Nominated Artist, Meduza, Makes Vietnam Debut at Zion

On Apr 27, 2023, the Italian DJ trio, Meduza, will perform in Saigon at Zion Sky Lounge & Dining.

The group is best known for their breakout 2019 hit “Pieces of You” which has over 168 million views on Youtube, reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. And while you may not know them by name, if you spend any time on a dance floor, you’ve certainly gyrated enthusiastically to some of their other jams, including "Lose Control," "Paradise," and "Wild.”

While Meduza has never performed in Vietnam before, this isn’t the first time their music draws energy from the nation. The music video for their 2022 smash, “Bad Memories” with James Carter, Elley Duhé, and FAST BOY was filmed at Hue’s famed abandoned waterpark. Watching it will give a nice introduction to their style with EDM.com noting that: “the group [is] keen on not being classified as radio-friendly mainstays. Their live performances take a more underground tone, reflecting the diverse range in their take on house music.”

The Kate festival is the oldest and most unique festival of the Cham ethnic minority and has been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2017.

Falling on the first day of the seventh month of the Cham calendar, the Kate festival is the opportunity for Cham Brahman people to commemorate their heroes, pay their respect to their gods and ancestors and pray for favorable weather and crops for the coming year. For visitors between October 23 and 25, it is a unique chance to explore the beauty of Cham culture, including architecture, costumes, instruments and traditional songs and dances.

The festival begins at the three Cham towers in Ninh Thuận province - Po Klaung Yăgrai, Po Rome, Po Inư Nagar - with processions of costumes, the opening of the tower doors and religious, cultural and traditional rituals. On the following day, the festival continues in local villages, where families begin to hold their own rites.

Vietnam's Cham population includes followers of Islam and Brahmanism. Ninh Thuận province is home to more than 53,700 Cham Brahman people.

Vietnam's Cham population includes followers of Islam and Brahmanism. Ninh Thuận province is home to more than 53,700 Cham Brahman people.
