South Korean Firm Puts Forth Plans for $3bn Metro Network in Da Nang

The proposed metro system would connect the city's downtown, beach, airport and major roads.

The project would consist of two metro and eight tram lines, according to Da Nang People's Committee, which recently announced the plans put forth by South Korea’s Seoul Metro Corporation.

Of the estimated US$3.14 billion construction cost, US$2.3 billion would be devoted to the East-West Metro Line running from the center of Thanh Khe District and Hai Chau District to East Sea Park. The South Korean firm signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the city government and suggested prioritizing two projects: the US$209 million East-West tramway line, which will run 8.24 kilometers connecting My Khe Beach with the airport; and the US$245 million 13.4-kilometer South-North tramway line that would link the beach with the southeastern region of the city.

There was no timeline set for the project but before any work can begin, further traffic studies are needed as well as a pre-feasability report.

The Department of Planning and Investment also recently announced that the Japan Transport Planning Association (JTPA) proposed a 14-kilometer-long automatic passenger transport system for the city. The roughly US$1 billion project would move up to 6,000 people per hour during peak travel hours.
