Annam Gallery is pleased to present the group exhibition Distorted Reality, featuring three emerging voices from the Annam Open Art Call 2025: Vu Tuan Viet, Dao Minh Tu, and Dao Minh Tuan. United by a spirit of experimentation and fresh perspectives on contemporary art, the artists weave together a visual current - where urban life and the shadowed corners of the psyche are layered, fragmented, and simultaneously rendered on a single canvas.

Everyday scenes - from urban landscapes and communal activities to inner emotional states - are dissected through a distinctive visual language infused with existential undertones. Each artwork functions as a visual incision, where distorted forms mirror the warped logic of contemporary life, forming a cartography of the psyche - tangled, multi-dimensional, and unresolved.

If Cubism opens up the potential to deconstruct reality through fractured forms and multi-perspective planes, then Simultaneity further expands the depth of the image - dissolving linear time and space into a network of memory and emotion, where past, present, and speculative futures coexist and intermingle. Here, “reality” becomes warped, layered, and paradoxical. Yet it is precisely within this sense of “distortion” that a more authentic world emerges: full of flux, transitions, and quiet revelations of what is often left unspoken in the everyday.

Amid reflection and inner dialogue, one is left wondering: where do we, as humans, stand in the fragile architecture of this contemporary life?

After some time away, Xinê XemChill is back with the short film series “A Friend Comes to Visit”, featuring nine unique works by eight talented young filmmakers.

With a warm, casual spirit, “A Friend Comes to Visit” invites audiences into the filmmakers’ “spiritual homes” — intimate spaces where they share deeply personal, poetic stories through cinema. The series consists of two screenings, each named after a line from poet Nguyễn Khuyến’s famous poem Bạn đến chơi nhà (“A Friend Comes to Visit”).

Screening 01: “Đến chơi đây” (Come Visit Here) — like a friendly call from a childhood companion, it returns us to the nostalgic, innocent atmosphere of youth, with four short films:

Moon Frogs (Duy Phy) – Animation.
Two frog brothers go out at night to watch the moon and drink tea, where they meet Lady Hằng Nga. The fish beneath her dress have eaten the moon — her home — and the frogs must help her get it back.

Mid-Autumn Night (Lê Xuân Tiến) – Animation.
Hanoi Children’s Palace, Mid-Autumn Festival 2024 — under the full moon, Nam Mô Địa Tạng Vương Bồ Tát.

Paper Crane (Đào Mạnh Khôi) – Drama.
Family troubles arise just as Minh, a 10-year-old schoolgirl, is preparing for a presentation, forcing her to reveal hidden corners of her life.

At 7PM, just as we were about to close the studio, I took a photo while the space was still quiet. Took the chance to post the event. The streets outside are terribly congested at this hour. Our little studio near Bến Thành Market is thankfully tucked away from the hustle and bustle. And thanks to the Ministry of Public Security's courtyard and the lush golden flamboyant tree outside our window, whether you're painting or simply sitting still listening to music, there’s a comforting sense of distance from the city. Occasionally, a gentle drizzle passes by, stirring the silence. Our open mic nights feel just like that rain—soothing the soul. So we don’t sleepwalk through summer. This time, the open mic’s theme is Songs of the Night—a request from a guest. We don’t quite know why, and perhaps we don’t need to. You're invited to come and share the night with us.

Our Open Mic doesn’t take reservations. Entry fee is 80,000 VND per person (includes a refreshing drink at the counter). It’s a chance to listen—and to sing. We’ll start with some light acoustic music around 7:30 PM, so feel free to come early and hang out! Ukuleles and guitars are always available in the studio whenever you need them. We also have a lovely accompanist in case you’d like to share a few songs together.

And if you happen to miss this one, don’t worry—the singing and celebration will continue for a long while. There are still many moonlit nights and cool breezes ahead, great films and music to enjoy, and endless parties waiting. We hope to see you next time—and many more times after that.
