Within the framework of the Living with Rivers project, initiated by the Embassy of France in Vietnam and the French Institute in Vietnam, the exhibition “We, the Rivers of Southern Vietnam” offers diverse perspectives on the relationship between people and rivers in Vietnam.

Adapted from the exhibition “We, the Rivers” organized by the Musée des Confluences (Lyon, France) in 2022, the exhibition highlights the distinctive characteristics of Southern Vietnam’s rivers, from the intricate waterways of the Mekong Delta to ongoing urban transformations.

Nearly 80 artifacts, paintings, photographs, and archival materials have been selected through the collaboration of four museums in Ho Chi Minh City (including the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of History, Ho Chi Minh City Museum, Southern Women's Museum, and Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts), collectively telling the story of rivers through a range of themes, from their origins to their future.

By combining scientific knowledge with an emotionally engaging approach, the exhibition aims to inspire new reflections on the relationship between people and rivers, while opening discussions on more sustainable ways of living together in the future.

Expression is always bound to context, and context, in turn, is governed by time and space. Traditional materials, having evolved from within and alongside the aesthetics of days past, boundlessly take on different manifestations in an era characterized by a myriad of materials and dense cultural intersections. This conversation addresses the issues encountered at this specific juncture of the traditional and the contemporary, while opening up a space for artist Linh San to share her own direction and approach.

During the conversation, Linh San will revisit understandings of tradition and traditional materials within a contemporary context by presenting the creation process of selected works from her art practice. The relationship between material and artist is not merely about using what is readily available; it is always a dynamic of observation, labor, adaptation, negotiation, and give-and-take. Even when the final artwork manifests through a single material, its expression may well have been transformed because throughout the creative process, the artist has worked with many different mediums. Craftsmanship, artisanship, and the physical elements of artistic creation will be discussed within the concurrent contexts of industrialization and post-industrialism in Vietnam.

This trip will explain the most common Buddhist terms and answer the most basic questions, such as:

1. Who is the Buddha? Who is a Bodhisattva?
2. What are Northern Buddhism, Southern Buddhism, Hinayana, Mahayana, Original Buddhism, Developed Buddhism, and Khất Sĩ?
3. What are Zen Buddhism, Pure Land Buddhism, and Esoteric Buddhism? Is Amitabha Buddha different from Shakyamuni Buddha?
4. Why do many temples have names beginning with “Ngọc+...”?
5. Why do many temples have names ending with “+Tự” instead of “Sư”?
6. Which figures are worshipped in temples? How can they be identified through the arrangement and design of statues?
7. Is Hòa Hảo Buddhism considered Buddhism?
8. How are spaces arranged within a Buddhist temple?

These questions will be gradually explained and answered through a 60-minute discussion followed by a walking journey through 5 temples belonging to Southern Buddhism, Khất Sĩ (Monks + Nuns), and Northern Buddhism (Monks and Nuns) along a route of approximately 2.5 kilometers.

DẠO BƯỚC GIÀ-LAM is a 5-hour field trip exploring monastic spaces. The trip is a walking exploration of Buddhist sects in Southern Vietnam through visits to Già-Lam temples in the old Gia Định area, now Gò Vấp, while answering fundamental questions about Buddhism and how to distinguish temples and tịnh xá belonging to different sects.

The Già-Lam sites visited in the program include: Trung Tâm Monastery, Từ Quang Tự, Tịnh Xá Ngọc Phương, Châu An Tự, Quảng Hương Già Lam.

Gấp Đôi Artist Group

In September 2023, the Gấp Đôi group introduced themselves to the public through their first exhibition titled “Finding a Thread” – a statement marking a reunion after many years apart from school, in search of reconnecting with painting and with one another.

In October 2024, that promise continued with “Tying a Thread” – where the joy of reunion and the heartfelt support from art lovers gave the artists greater confidence to strengthen their commitment to art.

And on June 3rd, 2026, the Gấp Đôi group is honored to reunite once again and greet audiences through the third chapter of the journey: “Weaving a Thread.”

From the shared bond of companionship...

At its core, “Weaving a Thread” is a reminder of everything crystallized from companionship and a profound love for painting. Along this journey, each member is like a thread carrying a distinct personality and artistic direction, yet all share a powerful commitment to what they express on paper, canvas, silk, or fabric. Gấp Đôi finds its common identity in the way these independent personalities do not erase one another, but instead coexist harmoniously and uplift one another within a shared collective flow.

...to the dimensions of privacy

If the previous stages of the journey were spaces where we blended into the collective, leaning on companionship and a love for painting as support, then “Weaving a Thread” is hoped to become a pause filled with inner strength. It closes the first chapter of a collective artistic journey while opening a new turning point: a space where we step back to look more deeply into our private worlds, to delve into silent concerns and the demanding depths of the creative self.

Within the artistic fabric called Gấp Đôi, each artist resembles a colored thread carrying a unique identity, destiny, and realm of contemplation:

Some choose to move against the current of time, anchoring their souls in national cultural heritage and profound Eastern aesthetics. There, traditional values and old memories are not merely images of the past, but are reborn and elevated through a contemporary lens, gentle yet proud. It is where personal perspectives find themselves intertwined with the cultural legacy embedded within collective memory.

Others immerse themselves in the hurried rhythm of urban daily life. Familiar street corners, unfamiliar figures, or the contrasting colors of the city are captured through sensitive hearts, transforming ordinary simplicity into poetic artistic moments.

Some channel their concerns into ecosystems – spaces where nature and humanity interact intimately every day. These works become sighs, soothing touches, or quiet reminders of the sacred connection between humankind and the surrounding world.

And there are those who choose to return, through painting, to deeper contemplative values about humanity through the lens of faith, hope, and doubt. Within this silent realm, painting becomes a whisper, a prayer, where artists peel back layers of consciousness in search of stillness within themselves.

The exhibition takes place from 03/06/2026 to 08/06/2026 at 218A Pasteur, Xuân Hòa Ward, HCMC.

Annam Gallery is honored to present the exhibition "The Structures of Everyday Life," featuring four artists with distinct individual practices – Lâm Văn Tuấn, Nguyễn Thế Hùng, Đào Minh Tú, and Vũ Tuấn Việt – who converge in their shared focus on the subtle, intricate layers of daily life.

The exhibition takes its roots from the concept of "The Infra-ordinary" (l'infra-ordinaire), a term coined by French writer and filmmaker Georges Perec in 1973. Rather than focusing on grand events or epochal statements, we invite viewers to look at the most ordinary things beneath our feet. "The Infra-ordinary" poses a vital proposition in perceiving life: instead of perpetually hunting for the extraordinary, we must learn to observe what is always present around us, yet often overlooked due to its repetitive and familiar nature. It could be a cramped room, an old table, the sounds of the street, the daily rhythm of commuting, or the quiet sense of existence within routine activities. Upon close observation of these seemingly trivial things, one discovers a distinct order and beauty - this is the starting point of art.

From cluttered, cramped rooms, Đào Minh Tú opens up a multi-layered visual world where objects, memories, and geometric forms overlap like a current flowing between reality and reminiscence. In his practice, living spaces become repositories for psychological shifts and the daily rhythms of contemporary humans. His art is a distillation of the most familiar spaces, transforming clutter into a unique narrative language.

Meanwhile, Vũ Tuấn Việt approaches life through Cubist structures and existential depth. The characters in his paintings seem to emerge from a "grey zone" of consciousness, where humanity continuously probes its relationship with the surrounding world. Beneath the bright layers of color lie contemplations on the state of existence, feelings of alienation, and a yearning to find harmonious connections between the individual, nature, and the universe.

In the practice of Lâm Văn Tuấn, painting becomes a method to delve into the internal world. His subjects are often immersed in contemplation, detached from the turbulence of the external world. Psychological vibrations, feelings of isolation, or the relationship between nature and civilization are interpreted through a pictorial space rich in emotion and introspection.
With Nguyễn Thế Hùng, inspiration stems from direct experiences with nature and the absurdities of modern life. His practice reflects how humans perceive themselves amidst daily collisions, where the boundaries between nature, society, and individual consciousness are in a constant state of flux.

The exhibition does not aim to retell grand stories or construct epochal discourses; it chooses to begin with the smallest things—what people often pass by every day without a second glance. Through the practices of these four artists, "the infra-ordinary" is no longer the blurred background of life, but becomes a space of observation, where beauty, memory, and the state of human existence are revealed in the most quiet yet profound ways.

Film Screening: Screening Time

Two short films from two different cultural backgrounds exploring the theme of intergenerational cultural conflict, specifically mother-daughter relationships in a new country they must adapt to after immigration.

Following the screening, there will be a special discussion with the two female directors, moderated by filmmaker Đặng Thành Tâm and Art Therapy Master Lê Thị Hương Giang.

1. Performance/Buổi Trình Diễn (20 minutes) – directed by Claire Zhou (Netherlands)

Lin (41 years old) is preparing for her solo performance at the Lunar New Year celebration at church. She hopes to impress the community, but according to her instructor, her performance still does not truly reach the audience because she seems to be hiding herself. However, when rumors about her son – who has not attended church for a long time – begin to spread, Lin faces a difficult choice: will she continue hiding who she truly is, or choose to live openly?

• Awarded Best Short Film nomination at the Golden Calf Awards (considered the Dutch Oscars)
• Screened at the Prize Film Festival and the San Francisco Asian American Film Festival.

2. Supermarket Affairs/Chuyện Siêu Thị (16 minutes) – directed by Nguyễn Lương Hằng

An older Vietnamese immigrant woman and her Americanized eldest daughter disagree over organizing the memorial death anniversary ceremony for their late husband and father. In the midst of grief, the mother falls for a handsome younger man she accidentally meets at an Asian supermarket, turning him into an unwilling witness to their family conflicts. The film humorously explores cultural and generational conflicts within immigrant families, while also reflecting tensions found in many Asian families.

Between younger people and older generations, there are sometimes hesitations that are difficult to name. A sentence left unsaid, an emotion not yet knowing how to be expressed, or desires for understanding that still linger somewhere within silence.

At the “Cây Xanh & Lá Cũng Xanh” festival, the workshop “Safe Home” with Minh Red will open a special space for intergenerational pairs - where parents and children, loved ones, or companions can connect through another kind of language: the language of hands and presence.

Through activities involving building and arranging blocks, participants will practice “thinking with their hands” - allowing emotions, boundaries, desires, and things difficult to express in words to gradually become clearer through each small movement. There is no need to be especially skillful or good at communication; the workshop is an invitation for us to try “rebuilding” the way we listen to one another, and to seek a more shared definition of the word “family.”

The Collaborative Improvisational Movement workshop with Lyon D. Nguyen will open up a space where participants can temporarily step away from daily pressures and reconnect with their own bodies through movement, music, and the presence of those around them.

No dance background or performance experience is needed. The workshop is suitable for all ages and for anyone who wishes to listen to their body in a gentler way. Through creative movement and collective improvisation activities, participants will have the opportunity to relax, play, interact, and experience connection beyond ordinary language.

A few small notes to help everyone have a fuller experience:

• Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement
• Avoid wearing skirts, jeans/khaki pants, or tank tops
• Avoid eating too much before the workshop

For Tiểu Hy, calligraphy is not simply the art of writing, but also a way to nurture inner peace and listen to the soul amidst the many complexities of everyday life.

Within this space, each written character may become a message for family, loved ones, or for oneself. There is no need to write beautifully or have prior experience; the workshop is a place where everyone can slow down a little, to realize that sometimes connection begins with the smallest and gentlest things.

At the expressive arts workshop “Drawing More Green,” we will open up a space where each person can connect with themselves and with their companions in entirely different ways - through colors, lines, and wholehearted presence.

Guided by Nguyễn Minh Nam - an art educator, expressive arts practitioner, Fulbright Master’s scholarship student in the United States, and Founder of Xưởng tay thở and MAMO Art Studio - participants will experience many engaging drawing methods such as blind drawing, drawing with both hands, and continuing each other’s ideas through collaborative drawing.

You do not need to know how to draw beautifully or possess artistic talent. What matters most is openness and the spirit of being willing to play along, to step into a wordless conversation where the process of drawing becomes joy, and the artworks become excuses for stories to find their voices. Perhaps within those seemingly spontaneous strokes of color, we may discover a very gentle part of ourselves and of the person sitting beside us.
