A Can Tho man is in hot water for allegedly comparing the city's holiday welcome display to women's underwear.
Tuoi Tre reports that Chung Hoang Chuong, who owns a SIM card store in the Mekong Delta's largest city, has been invited to speak with municipal information inspectors for a Facebook post he made this week.
Chuong shared a picture of Can Tho's New Year welcome gate alongside two images of women's thongs, though he didn't make a direct comparison in the text.
According to the news source, he wrote: "If you happen to be in Can Tho, remember that once you go through this [entrance], on your right will be [my store]. Make sure to stop by and buy my SIM cards. They'll bring you luck."
The post didn't go down well with local officials.
The local information inspectorate said in a document regarding the gate: "The inspectorate of the Can Tho Department of Information and Communications invites Mr. Chung Hoang Chuong to [our office on Thursday] to discuss his posting of inaccurate information on the Facebook of Chuong May Man [about the welcome gate]."
Chuong has protested, says there is nothing wrong with his post, while some members of the public support him as well.
One Tuoi Tre reader said: "Panties are not a taboo product, nor are they banned from public advertising, so why does the department have to handle this case?"
Others, meanwhile, said they believe the gate resembles a uterus, not a thong.
In 2016 netizens compared a holiday lighting display in Hai Phong to "flying panties", while last month a man from Da Lat was punished for claiming that it was snowing in the Central Highlands city on Facebook.
