There are approximately 7,000 overseas Vietnamese people living in Pursat, Cambodia.
On July 9, the Consulate General of Vietnam in Battambang and the Khmer-Vietnamese Association Executive Board in Pursat, Cambodia held an inauguration ceremony for the opening of a new floating school in Pursat for Vietnamese students, VietnamNet reports.
The school was built on Tonle Sap, a freshwater lake in Koh Kek Village in Kan Dieng District of Pursat. The school was made out of wood and furnished with chairs, tables, and other necessary facilities. The cost of construction for the school was funded by the Committee of Overseas Vietnamese, a unit of Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"Our fishing village received a great support from the communist party and the Vietnam's government despite being located in a remote area of Tonlé Sap. Opening Vietnamese classes here is a very crucial foundation for younger generations to preserve their national and cultural heritage alongside with learning about the indigenous culture. It would help students to fit in with both the Vietnamese and Khmer community here," Head of the Vietnam-Khmer Association Ngo Van Ly said.
Earlier this year in March, the first primary school for Vietnamese students on Tonle Sap was built.
Koh Kek Village is currently home to 289 households and 100 students who are studying Vietnamese primary school curriculum from Grade 1 to Grade 3.
