[Video] Can Tho Gets Its First Pedestrian Bridge

Can Tho's brand-new pedestrian bridge opened to residents just in time for Tet.

After a year of construction, the VND50 billion (US$2.2 million) bridge made its debut two days before the lunar new year, reports VnExpress.

Spanning 200 meters over the Khai Luong Canal, the structure overlooks the Delta city's famous Ninh Kieu Wharf, linking the mainlaind with Cai Khe Islet. An LED lighting system also illuminates the bridge, while flowers and small plants, watered by an automatic system, run the length of its railings.

Locals and tourists alike were keen to get a glimpse of the new bridge. On Valentine’s Day, many couples affirmed their romance on the bridge by putting love locks on its railings, a custom modeled after Paris' Pont des Arts.

Head of Ninh Kieu District's People’s Committee Duong Tan Hien, however, did not find the gesture romantic and has ordered the removal of Can Tho's love locks to retain the bridge’s original look and safety.

Construction of Can Tho’s pedestrian bridge began in January 2015 to celebrate the 12th National Party Congress.
