From India to Cambodia @ The Old Compass Cafe

From the organizer: Our dear friend Dr Jean-Michel Filippi is returning to The Old Compass Cafe to discuss Indianization in Cambodia.

FROM INDIA TO CAMBODIA

A visit to Angkor Wat amply demonstrates the impact of Indian civilisation on Khmer culture during the Angkorian period. Cambodia is one of the most important Hinduized / Indianized Southeast Asian civilizations. When the French adopted the name Indochina for their colonial territories, they acknowledged the influence of Indian and Chinese culture on this region.

In his return to The Old Compass Cafe, Professor Filippi will explain what is really underlying the concept of Indianization in Cambodia.

Looking at Indian influence on early Cambodian society, religion, architecture, arts, state and administration, Dr Filippi will demonstrate that Cambodia's embrace of Indian culture and political influences did not produce mere copies of the originals.

Corsican born Jean-Michel Filippi is Professor of Khmer Linguistics at the Royal University of Phnom Penh and is a leading scholar of Cambodian languages. He completed his Phd at the Sorbonne in Paris. His decade long fascination with Cambodia reaches into the country’s extraordinary history, art and architecture.

He is the author of the book Strolling around Phnom Penh, and is a passionate speaker. For more information about Dr. Jean-Michel, please check out www.kampotmuseum.wordpress.com
