Halloween is coming soon and Saigon Outcast is dedicating the entire October programme of their ‘Thursday outdoor cinema’ to horror and thriller films.

This Thursday they will kick off with an interesting and unusual choice, ‘Stoker’ by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Sympahty for Mr. Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance).  

Starring Nicole Kidman and the brilliant Mia Wasikowska (Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, The kids are all right), the film is a gothic-family life drama that revolves around the Stoker family, that, after the death of the father, welcomes the globe-trotting uncle into their lives. The new arrival sets in motion a series of mysterious events and suspicious behaviours by the three family members.

Park is able to maintain his visual style intact, thanks also to cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung, who has worked with Park on many other films before. However, it will be interesting for the audience to see how the Asian director copes with crafting a film that needs to take into consideration the American audience. Will he succeed in combining an Asian vision with an American market or will he fail like it happened to Won Kar Wai in My blueberry nights?
