Movie Night: The Battle of Algiers @ Yoko Cafe

From the organizer: This classic film, directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, tells the story of Algeria’s epic fight of Independence against French colonial rule.

Shot in the streets of Algiers, adopting a pseudo-documentary style, the story comes back on the insurgency that started in 1954 in Algiers against French power. It revolves around Algerian independent movement, the National Liberation Front, (FLN) and its urban guerrilla strategy to attack French military and defend against paratroopers’ merciless retaliations. As the resistance is based in the old city, the Casbah, we can see how they purposefully use the dense and tortuous urban fabric to hide away from their enemy.
Pontecorvo’s film is one of the most powerful historical dramas of all time and another (after “Oh, Sun”) reference of Third Cinema.
Oh, and the soundtrack is by Ennio Morricone.
