Bizet’s sweeping romance LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES (The Pearl Fishers) is the next work chosen by From Alpha to Opera team to commemorate 180th birthday of the work’s composer, Georges Bizet (born 25 October 1838 - deceased 3 June 1875). This opera was composed when Bizet was not yet 25 years old. The work shows its promise of Bizet’s gift for melody and evocative instrumentation which herald his genius that later culminated “Carmen” 10 years later.

LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES, The Pearl Fishers - Bizet’s rarely heard opera returned to the Met for the first time in a century on New Year’s Eve 2016, in Penny Woolcock’s acclaimed new production. Star soprano Diana Damrau sings Leïla, the virgin priestess at the center of the story. Matthew Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecień are Nadir and Zurga, rivals for Leïla’s love who have sworn to renounce her to protect their friendship. Nicolas Testé is the high priest Nourabad and Gianandrea Noseda conducts Bizet’s supremely romantic score.

The opera was originally set in Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka) in non-historic “ancient times,” signifying an exotic land with a mythical and romantic aura. The Met’s new production places the action in an unspecified locale in the Far East.

The opera premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris, on 30 September 1863. Critics at the time were not especially enthused but the audience was swept up in the ravishing score tinged with the allure of a mythical South Asian setting. The drama itself remains within the conventional standards of the day, with a love triangle complicated by the true friendship of the two men involved in it.
