BackEvents Near Me » Exhibition Openings: 'Interface' and 'My Marriage' @ The Factory Contemporary Art Center

The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre is pleased to present two new exhibitions 'Interface' by Oanh Phi Phi and 'My Marriage' by Võ Thuỷ Tiên

In 'Interface' by Oanh Phi Phi, lacquer is a material of not only physical, but also visceral density. Specula, an immersive lacquered tunnel is akin to stepping in to a glowing womb; while Palimpsest personifies tools of producing images (where projections magnifying glass paintings recall the lens structure of a human eye). In this exhibition these artworks are analogous to organs of a body, indeed their ‘shape’, their ‘skin’, their ‘interface’ infers protection, purpose and ultimately, an identity. Whilst respectful of the history of lacquer, which remains a celebrated national art form in Vietnam today, Oanh Phi Phi seeks to challenge the assumption of form, capacity and definition of this medium, preferring to argue its immersive (as opposed to optical /decorative) powers. ‘My Marriage’ is an ongoing project by Võ Thuỷ Tiên, which delves into the different layers of the artist’s personal life, and explores ideas of marriage and motherhood, domesticity and the family, and the complexity of love and relationships. Via Thuỷ Tiên’s own (sometimes imagined) past, these themes are given shape through the usage and collage of certain images of fruit and objects (some considered highly symbolic in Vietnamese cultural life) - appearing in works of photography, sculpture and moving image throughout the exhibition.
