'Scraps' Exhibition - Artist Lee Wessels @ Giant Step Gallery

From the organizer: Graffiti "writers" use markers and spraypaint in public space as their medium to bring their art to the massses, instant painting, instant fame. It's may be the most accesible, fastest growing art movement in the world. The 1970's marking the beginning of postmodern graffiti writing as we know it today, a kid who named himself "cornbread" from phillydelphia wrote his name all over his neighborhood, when people found out it was a name, they realized Cornbread was famous. Cornbread is known to be the first initial graffiti writer, but New York graffiti writers made it famous, and the graffiti documentary "style wars" amped it up.

Growing up in the Netherlands Wessels had found his love for graffiti at the age of 14. Focussing solely on painting letter design and fonts; known as "bombing". Bombing is initial graffiti painted illegally in public space, or on any form of public transportation. Bombers use strategies and techniques similar to corporate advertising, to gain recognition your name has to be legible, have lots of repetition, exposure and an unique style.

Nowadays Wessels focusses on using different mediums for his letter designs and more expressive forms of "graffiti". "I have been bombing for over 15 enjoyable years, but found myself stuck and restricted in my graffiti. And started to make abstract paintings beside my late-night adventures. Lately, I have been collaborating with sculptors and new media artists who inspired me, and opened up alot of possibilites to evolve this art form through new mediums in a different context"

Wessels collects bits and pieces of scrap metal from Saigon, and using an arc welder to make an installation which he will finish constructing the night of the opening. The pieces represent a life like graffiti letter design breaking loose from his traditional form.
