Movie Night: La Haine (Hate) @ Yoko

Hate, or La Haine, is a French classic from the 1990's. During violent riots between youth and police forces, one young men is seriously injured and lies in a coma. The movie tells the story of his three friends' following day: Vinz only thinks about revenge, Hubert's sole wish is to leave the housing estate while Saïd mediates between his two mates. A decisive day in their lives.

Filmmaker Matthieu Kassovitz was inspired by a context of 15 years of tensions (sometimes errupting into violent riots) in Paris suburbs.
Paris is not only Amelie's romantic escapes in Montmartre ; it is also the violence of the segregation and associated despise, of the opposition between the capital and its suburbs and their brutal separation embodied by the uncrossable « Peripherique » (Paris' ring road). In this context, the film is a brilliant exploration of how France's undesired youth grapple with everyday's set of boredom and challenges to give their lives a meaning.
La Haine is a cornerstone of France's urban/street culture as it is one of the first artistic attempts to show another reality – certainly less glamorous than Bardot's shapes – of French society.
