Foreigner Praised Online After Moving Moto Driver Blocking Hanoi Road

Here’s the full story behind the kerfuffle between a foreign man and a local motorcyclist that was caught on tape recently.

Over the weekend, you probably came across a video clip on Facebook depicting a commotion between a local woman and a foreigner. The footage, recorded by the man’s dashboard cam, shows a female motorcyclist stopping abruptly in the middle of a Hanoi street to use her phone and blocking traffic.

After a few moments the car’s owner – a foreign man in his 40s – gets out of the vehicle to ask the woman to move on, but she ignores him. The clip ends with the man forcefully dragging her scooter towards the pavement.

The video is short, but it has received a lot of attention online. Most comments lauded the man for his assertiveness in bringing about public order and shared similar stories of inconsiderate female motorcyclists – dubbed “ninjas on LEAD” by netizens due to their driving dress code.

The incident took place on Kim Ma Street in Hanoi on the morning on October 27. According to a local xe ôm driver, the woman blew a red light and was then stopped by police officers. However, she didn’t comply and stopped in the middle of the street to film the officers.

After dragging her vehicle to the pavement, the foreign man handed her phone to the police officers, returned to his car and drove away.

“I have to admit that the foreign man is really strong, and the woman was wrong to behave like that,” the xe ôm driver told Kenh14 in Vietnamese. “Lucky [for her], the police only gave her a warning and then let her go.”

The officers stationed on the street at the moment confirmed the events.

The online news source also identified the foreign man as Waldo, a Finnish expat who has lived in Vietnam for five years.

“She was using her phone to film [on the street], I told her to make way but she did not acknowledge me,” the 40-year-old man told Kenh14.
