Quang Binh Airport Fined for Closing Terminal to Play Badminton

Who can refuse a badminton match?

According to Thanh Nien, on March 19, Dong Hoi Airport in Quang Binh closed its terminal from 7:55am to 10am to host a badminton match among its employees in early celebration of the of the HCM Communist Youth Union's anniversary. The games were held in the waiting lounge. What could possibly go wrong?

Turns out a domestic flight from Cam Ranh was expected to land in Dong Hoi at 9am that day. Since the terminal was shut down, passengers and their luggage were sent to the airport’s restricted area.

The incident caused a stir among Vietnamese online citizens when a video showing confused passengers being kept out of the terminal went viral online. To add to the confusion, the airport's employees continued their badminton match knowing there were passengers landing. An official investigation led by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) was later initiated.

According to Le Dang Bac, the chief inspector of CAAV, Dong Hoi airport has violated civil aviation law by postponing their services without consulting authorities. The airport was later fined VND35 million for this violation.
