Da Lat’s historic maps factory, one of the city’s most important historical buildings went up in flames in the early morning hours of June 9.
According to Tuoi Tre, residents said that they had heard explosions and within minutes, fire and smoke billowed from the stone structure.
After 3 hours, the fire was extinguished but not before 1/3 of the building was entirely destroyed.
Investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
Completed in 1943 the building features 1-meter thick limestone walls. It was the city’s Nha Dia Du prior to 1975 and now serves as the maps factory for the Mapping Department of the National Defense Department.
