Woman Gives Birth on the Street in Northern Vietnam

Last week, while driving to her hometown, local woman Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan had to put her journey on hold in order give birth on a sidewalk in Yen Bai province.

Thanh Loan was making the 190-kilometer trip from Lao Cai province to her hometown in Phu Tho when she began having contractions, reports Tuoi Tre. The expectant mother wasn’t due for another 15 days, however Thanh Loan’s new daughter decided this was the appropriate time to make her debut.

Locals helped the woman off her motorbike and covered her with a blanket. Dr. Hoang Thi Hong Loan of the Yen Binh District Medical Center heard of the young mother’s situation around 10am, she told Nguoi Dua Tin, however by the time doctors reached Thanh Loan she had already given birth.

The baby girl was born weighing just over three kilograms. In a video posted to Facebook page Tay Bac 24h, Thanh Loan can be seen lying on the sidewalk as a medical team arrives. A helpful bystander holds her daughter, who is swaddled in warm clothing, while other witnesses tuck small donations into the baby’s blankets.

Both mother and child were taken to the nearby Yen Binh District Medical Center, where they were found to be in good health.
