A pop up exhibition on Sunday January 31st - we will host the crew and the artist Phương Vũ Mạnh as they prepare the final scene for their epic documentary. Phương Vũ Mạnh will be performing his final piece for the doc, centered around Freedom and Release.

Phương Vũ Mạnh is a contemporary Vietnamese artist born in 1972 in Ha Noi. Working primarily in visual mediums, he has built a respectable career, establishing himself as one of Vietnam’s preeminent artists in the 21st-century. Residing now in Bac Ninh, Vu Manh continues to develop his work outside the city life of the capital, spending his time between his studio and associating with the community he now calls home.

Vu Manh’s style has evolved from the early instruction of his grandfather (a painter in the traditional Vietnamese style) to a style incorporating Western influences of the 19th and 20th centuries as diverse as Van Gogh and Gauguin to Picasso and Haring. His syncretic style of Eastern and Western influences is reflected in his own life and personal philosophy, which have continually led him to go against the grain of cultural expectations and norms, while steadily accumulating both national and international respect for his work.

Manh is not a man given to celebrity or attention-seeking, and it is worth documenting his evolving relationship to the first documentary attempting to understand him and his work.
