Vietnam Aims to Have 2 Universities in Asia's Top 100

Under the latest educational proposal, the Vietnamese government aims to bring at least two local universities into the list of Top 100 universities in Asia.

According to the Asian University Rankings of 2019 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Vietnam is home to seven universities in the top 500 on the list. The best-performing institution is Hanoi National University, which places 124th.

Vietnam has set major goals for the 2019-2025 period in order to improve teaching quality as well as create a strong reputation for higher education in Vietnam in hopes of entering the Top 100.

Specifically, education reforms will take place so that during this period, Vietnam will have 10 universities in the Top 400 with at least two in the Top 100. Globally, the country hopes to have at least four high-education institutions among the world's best 1,000 universities.

Additionally, schools are requested to stop enrolling students in low-impact programs or majors that no longer meet the requirements. To optimize resources, institutions that are not operating effectively might be dissolved or merged.

Tthe government will also offer policies to encourage universities to invest in developing high-quality training programs in foreign languages — especially priority fields such as information technology, tourism, agriculture, etc.
