Opera the MAGIC FLUTE @ The Opera House of Ho Chi Minh City

The Magic Flute needs no introduction. It’s among the five most frequently-performed operas worldwide, and was Mozart’s last important opera.

HBSO’s fully-staged production, accompanied by a large orchestra, has been a sold-out venture for several years. It consists of musical passages interspersed by spoken dialogue. The sung passages will be in German, the spoken dialogue in Vietnamese. It will be staged again at the Saigon Opera House on June 9 and 10, beginning at 8pm. All but one of the singers will be Vietnamese – the one exception is Derek Anthony who will sing the role of Sarastro who controls the fate of the two lovers, Tamino and Pamina. Mozart and his friend Schikaneder, a local theater-owner in Vienna, created this opera in German in order to appeal to the ordinary citizens, whose native language was German. Most of Mozart’s other operas were written in Italian, at the time the international language of music. The Magic Flute is directed by the German director David Hermann, and will be conducted by the HBSO’s Tran Nhat Minh.
