FAMLAB OPEN SESSION is a series of curated events showcasing contemporary explorations into Vietnamese music and film lineages. The initiative – part of the FAMLAB strand of the on-going project Heritage of Future Past – has so far taken on discourse events around themes as varied as film restoration/archiving, humour throughout cinema history, and the non-fictional visual representation of traditional music genres.

For the first music-focused Open Session and in what is a British Council Vietnam debut at The Observatory – a venue amongst South East Asia’s most renowned institutions for adventurous electronic music – we are delighted to showcase two performances that track, trace, remember, and reimagine an inter-temporal cross-section of the country’s vast sonic traditions.

Following the recent release of Saigon Supersound’s second volume, record collector/producer Jan Hagenkoetter will be presenting a DJ set of (lost) classics across 1960s/1970s Vietnamese popular musics: from nhạc vàng to cải lương, bolero to rock ‘n’ roll. Next to this, the evening’s live-music portion takes the form of the premiere of a sound-art piece written by emerging composers Nhung Nguyen (also known as Sound Awakener) and Zach Schreier for electronics, percussions, traditional instruments and field recordings, to be performed by an ensemble group.

THE OBSERVATORY 3.0 can be found on the tenth floor of 85 Cách Mạng Tháng 8, District 1. Their high standards of music remains, their dance space will continue to be filled with the sounds of some of the best there is. To this they have added a rooftop lounge, an exclusive view on the Saigon skyline, and more to come.

HERITAGE OF FUTURE PAST is a two-year project delivered through the British Council’s Culture and Development initiative. Engaging with Vietnam’s music and film heritage, especially those currently under-threat or under-represented, the project consists of two interconnected strands: community-level activities, and FAMLAB (Film, Archive and Music Lab). Launched in April 2018, the project seeks to create opportunities for communities across the country to contribute to – and benefit from – the safeguarding and reinvigoration of their cultural heritage.
