From Brick Lane to Saigon @ BLOQ

In this exhibition, hosted by Jack Clayton Art displayed, for the first time will be a series of woodcut prints inspired by Brick Lane Street in the heart London’s trendy East End.

The theme is inspired by the popular Ukiyo-e theme of ‘8 views’ and is a series of 8 images captured on a walk from one side of Brick Lane to the other. Each block is hand carved and printed in the reduction method and watercolour tones have been added for extra depth. There will also be a range of the artist's most popular Vietnam prints including his illustrations and some prints from the archives of his time in Australia before he arrived in Vietnam.

Jack Clayton is an artist from East London who has been living in HCMC for the last 8 years. In that time his environment has transformed his art into what can be best described as a celebration of street culture up and down Vietnam. Originally he used his art to learn and understand more about this fascinating new culture he was experiencing but since then it has grown to much more.

Previous to his time in Vietnam he spent two years in Australia and although he didn’t have as much time as he would of liked to dedicate to his art he still made some prints inspired by his time in Kakadu National Park and exhibited at the Brunswick Street Gallery in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Some of these prints will also be on display too!

His medium of choice is woodcut printmaking and he also creates large, detailed pen and ink illustrations which he manipulates in Photoshop. These illustrations are much bigger projects which are worked on slowly, and since arriving in Vietnam he has only made four. He started woodcutting in his last year of university where he studied Graphic Arts and design and chose to specialise in traditional, narrative illustration.

During 2020 he set up his own independent art gallery in D4 called ‘Saigon Print Shop’ where he invites customers for a tour of his work and portfolio. In this exhibition ‘Saigon Print Shop’ will also host a small pop up shop on the opening night of the event and all the woodblocks will be on display and there will be a chance to buy prints of all his designs and find out more about his process.
