The Portland, Oregon-based psychedelic rock band recorded the album entirely in Vietnam.
According to Pitchfork, the seven-track LP will be entirely instrumental and feature traditional Vietnamese instruments such as sáo trúc and đàn môi, played by local Musician Ming Nguyen. The album was recorded at Hanoi’s Phu Sa Studio and will be released on October 26.
The band’s fourth album, Sex & Food, was released earlier this year and rated as one 2018’s best albums by BBC Radio 6 Music. The upcoming record, named IC-01 Hanoi, was recorded during the same sessions.
So far they have only released one track from the album, titled ‘Hanoi 6.’ Described as “a sonic distillation of the band’s influences in Jazz, Krautrock and the avant garde,” the album is set to be a musical departure from previous releases.
With a sáo trúc drone, erratic snare drums and agitated sax wailing, the 10-minute track has more in common with Miles Davis’s experimental albums than psychedelic rock.
