This week, a unique concert comes to Hanoi.
The show, titled “On the Path of the Ancestors,” will be held at the Vietnam National Acadamy of Music and begin at 8pm. It will open with a performance of original composition 'JIJI' by recent graduate Luong Hue Trinh, played on a đàn tranh (16-chord zither) and complemented by electronic sounds, according to Dan Tri.
After a rendition of Nguyen Thien Dao’s 1968 composition ‘Tuyen Lua,’ the show will conclude with the world premiere of Vu Nhat Tan’s ‘Metal Water Fire,’ performed with the Hanoi New Music Ensemble, the Ancient Music Group of Tonkin and Grammy Award-winning American conductor Jeff von der Schmidt. This closing performance will also include poetry from Nguyen Duy.
Schmidt previously won two Grammy Awards in 2003 and 2004, while receiving nominations on another seven occasions. He has conducted at performances in Asia, America, and Europe.
He also has a longstanding connecting with Vietnam, due to serving as an artistic advisor to the Hanoi New Music Ensemble and setting up the 2010 Ascending Dragon Music Festival and Cultural Exchange, which at the time was the largest cultural exchange between the two countries.
