Public Phones Set To Return To Saigon

Two years after being removed, public phone booths are about reappear on Saigon, mainly for tourist use, reports Vietnam Net.

"The city has assigned us to build four telephone-information boxes in District 1 to serve tourists, who need information about locations,” said an official of the HCM City Department of Information and Telecommunications.

These phones will be installed in the same locations as the old booths that were uprooted in 2012 due to disuse.

Since they’re meant to act as tourist aids, the city has opted not to allow for the use coins or cards, likely meaning that one will only be able to contact tourist services rather than normal numbers.

If proven to be effective, the city will add more around the city.

In October 2012, Saigon’s 2,000 public telephones were removed after 15 years of operation, falling victim to the explosion of mobile phones.
