Ha Tinh Locals Caught Hanging Trash Bags on Saigon-Bound Train

Your neighborhood garbage truck could never be as cool as Ha Tinh Province’s “garbage train”.

On November 20, a new viral clip started making the rounds in Vietnam’s cybersphere. The phone recording lasts for two-odd minutes, showing a man and two women hanging a few large trash bags onto a moving train. According to the caption, the clip was filmed in Huong Khe Town in Ha Tinh Province and the train was bound for Saigon.

The “train trash scandal” has since attracted a lot of attention online as netizens were outraged that Huong Khe residents would compromise the train’s safety in such a gross manner.

Chairman of the Huong Khe People’s Committee Le Huu Thai shared with Tuoi Tre in an interview recently that the location in the clip is at the Huong Pho Railway Station in his town. He acknowledged the authenticity of the video and said that local authorities are working on punishing those involved.

“We are identifying the individuals in the video and will impose a suitable punishment. Local authorities have banned locals from bringing their garbage to the train station,” Thai declared.

Another video report by VTC1 noted that the town used to have a garbage disposal site; however, due to improper treatment, the smell from the facility became so unbearable that local residents had it shut down. Another site was proposed, but this also met disagreement from locals.

Since then, Huong Khe residents have had to live without a designated trash deposit site, while the area surrounding the train track also became an unofficial dumping site.
