And then, of course, there's earthworm hunting.

This turned out to be the downfall of a Chinese man in Quang Tri province, according to Thanh Nien. Gan DeQiang, 40, was visiting Vietnam on a tourist visa when he and his Vietnamese interpreter, 25-year-old Le Van Cuong, tried to convince a group of locals to hunt for earthworms using an illegal chemical.

The pair explained to residents that, by pouring the unnamed white substance onto the ground, it would encourage the earthworms to surface. The creatures would then be captured and, for their trouble, the duo promised to pay US$0.35 per kilo of fresh earthworms.

It is unclear why DeQiang needed the earthworms so badly, however he was summoned to the Quang Tri border authorities on September 17 and tried to bribe his way out of the situation.

When this failed, DeQiang was charged with use of illegal chemical in Vietnam and abusing his tourist visa. Authorities deported the Chinese man and also fined him VND16 million for the offenses.

Cuong, his partner in crime, was also fined VND1 million for not advising DeQiang to obtain a temporary residence visa.
