Cam Ranh's New International Port Can Accommodate Carriers, Submarines: Report

Earlier this month, Vietnam unveiled a massive new international seaport at Cam Ranh Bay.

The enormous VND2 trillion (US$89.7 million) facility can accommodate up to 18 ships at one time and is open to both military and civilian vessels, reports Thanh Nien.

The site of a former military base, Cam Ranh Bay's new facility first began construction in September 2014 and completed its first phase this month. Though the final completion date for phase two has yet to be announced, the Cam Ranh site is set to be one of Vietnam's largest ports in terms of wharf length.

The facility also houses naval maintenance and logistics equipment and is capable of receiving up to 185 ships per year.

According to the Diplomat, facilities can accommodate everything from small patrol ships and submarines to aircraft carriers.

Among its earliest guests are a pair of Japanese naval ships, which are in Cam Ranh Bay until April 27 conducting a naval exercise with roughly 500 personnel, reports Tuoi Tre. This is the first time Japanese military vessels have visited Vietnam.
