For its recent One Photo, One Country, One Year series, Reuters picked a snapshot from Vietnam depicting an áo dài-clad lady posing on an ornamental peach tree plantation in Hanoi.
The photo series is a yearly feature on the news website, in which the editorial team selects an outstanding photo from each country.
Following the publication of the feature, Tuoi Tre’s team of reporters identified the muse in the photo as Nguyen Hoang Kieu Trinh, a recent graduate of Saigon’s Hoa Sen University.
“[I] shot the peach blossoms photo collection not long before Tet in 2016 with photographer Do Xuan But,” Trinh told Tuoi Tre in Vietnamese. “[I] wanted to take advantage of the vacation to Hanoi to create some memories with real peach blossoms, because it’s not available in the south where [I] live.”
The 22-year-old also added that she was focused on posing for her own collection and didn’t notice that a Reuters photographer also took a shot of her. Trinh was only aware of the image when a few friends sent her the link to Reuters’ One Photo, One Country, One Year album on December 27.
“[I] feel surprised, happy and extremely proud that the image of me in an áo dài was chosen to be the most impressive photo in 2016 of Vietnam,” she shared with the news source.
Reuters’ image collection comprises 155 photos from countries all over the world, according to Tuoi Tre. Other notable picks in Asia include a Cambodian girl sitting atop a boat on a dried-out lake in the country’s Kandal province and North Korea’s mesmerizing New Year fireworks show.
