ART TOUR WITH CURATOR LÊ THUẬN UYÊN
The artists of the Gang of Five (consisting of Hồng Việt Dũng, Hà Trí Hiếu, Đặng Xuân Hoà, Trần Lương and Phạm Quang Vinh) are familiar names to the Vietnamese art community. Amongst the most promising artists of their generation in post-Doi Moi Vietnam, they are known for creating bold, robust and distinctive works, depicting personal conceptions that depart from the officially-dictated Social Realist style prevalent in Vietnam until the mid 1980s. But who are the Gang of Five as individual artists? What drove them to be different and unique? What influences and marks have they each left on the local artistic landscape? Come join curator Lê Thuận Uyên for a tour of the exhibition she curated - ‘Gang of Five Chancing Modern’. Learn more about the artists, their practice and the stories behind their works; discover how the social context of the 1980s further developed their artistic thinking, and what helped them stand the test of time and continue to make art for the last three decades.
