INTRODUCTION:

Writer and curator Legacy Russell published Glitch Feminism as a book-cum-manifesto. Starting out as “essays intended to only live on the Internet”, Russell’s twelve-chapter collection unpacks the false dualism between the digital and the real, where we no longer live offline IRL (in real life) but AFK (away from keyboard). In this unpacking, Glitch Feminism looks to the glitch – a faulty overlaying and machine error – as a space for liberation; to embody the glitch is to happily fail and fuck up the system that never wanted us in our Othered, queer, binary-circumventing (and hopefully -destroying) skins.

As we read two of the book’s chapters – “Glitch is Error” and “Glitch Mobilizes”, which serve as entry points for the discussion – we will look at how to utilise and embrace the power of social media, contend with strategies to embody error, and, as errors, how to tear down the system from within.
