Wednesday 20th August - The Observatory will be screening the recently-released documentary on the life and music of William Onyeabor - enigmatic, revolutionary and reclusive Nigerian electronic musician who rose to national fame in the late 70s and early 80s before retreating into a life of relative seclusion as a born-again Christian [who is very reluctant to talk about his past].
The name Onyeabor has resurfaced to the consciousness of music lovers globally since Luaka Bop became the first label to release a compilation of his tracks in late 2013. His songs deliver a delicious mix of social, political, religious and emotional messages in a highly unique and analog electronic style - and are a true experience to listen to.
This is a great chance to come and get a taste of the unique techniques Onyeabor was using to craft his signature electronic music during the very early, experimental stages of its development as a distinct new approach throughout the world, as well as to dance to a wide range of African sounds later on in the night via the selections of afro-enthusiast DAN LO.
Free entrance
