The Thong Dong Ngẫm Ngợi Philosophy Talk Series is organized with the aim of presenting lectures and dialogues on the influences and applications of philosophy in contemporary life. Through the guidance and conversations of philosophy researcher Bùi Văn Nam Sơn and collaborators, philosophical discussions are not merely "lofty and abstract," but can permeate every corner of our inner soul and outer life.

MAIN TOPIC OF SESSION 06: HUMANISTIC PSYCHOANALYSIS: THE TRAGEDY OF FREEDOM, RADICAL ALIENATION, AND THE ONTOLOGY OF LOVE - ERICH FROMM FROM A PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE

“Erich Fromm from a Philosophical Perspective” outlines a comprehensive ontological map of Erich Fromm’s Humanistic Psychoanalysis. It represents Fromm’s ambitious effort to combine Sigmund Freud’s analysis of the unconscious with Karl Marx’s critique of social alienation, illuminated through the lenses of Spinoza’s Ethics and Zen Buddhism.

Beginning with a critique of Freud’s biological determinism, Fromm argues that the root of human suffering does not stem from sexual repression, but from “existential separateness.” The loss of natural instincts and the awakening of reason have cast human beings into a state of loneliness, torn between the longing for infinite eternity and the reality of finite death. To bridge this rupture, humans develop five fundamental existential needs: relatedness, transcendence, rootedness, identity, and a frame of orientation.
