Fruit, Children & The Cutting @ Dia Projects

Children are the sweet things in life, just like fruits, loved by everyone. However, at times we use violence to raise our children. The innocence might still exist on their faces, but what embeds in their souls is the horror of violence.

Dia Projects is proud to host Hoang Mai's first solo exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City. Bringing together painting, illustration and sculpture Hoang comments on the social conditions of family life. The paintings and sculpture at first are almost cute and benign, but underneath speak to a serious issue in how children are raised.

Opening on Wednesday, 3 August til Sunday, 25 August 2016
6:00 PM
At Dia Projects, 103 Đồng Khởi, 2nd Floor
All welcome. Admission is free!

-ABOUT ARTIST-
Hoang Mai was born in 1983, in Hai Phong City, Viet Nam
Lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City

Illustrator & visual artist Hoang Mai (based in HCMC, Vietnam) specializes in unique portraits of which enormous eyes are the focus of the work. Inspired by Japanese anime and manga, Hoang often uses traditional media such as watercolor, ink and color pencils to illustrate his own world. In that world, all creatures are missing a part, either of their bodies or of their souls. In that world, innocence and horror co-exist in a colorful but also dark and distorted way.
Mai Hoang’s first solo exhibition was The Little Garden (2015) in Ho Chi Minh City. Besides, his works prior to Fruit, Children and the Cutting include Concrete Canvases (2015), a collaboration with Saigon Artbook, wall painting at 3A Station (2015-2016), and Art for You (2016) with Workroom Four in Hanoi.
