Back Events Near Me » Phnom Penh - the story of a city with Jean-Michel Filippi @ The Old Compass Cafe

From the organizer: Join us on Thursday 19 January, 2017 for a second talk by Jean-Michel Filippi - Phnom Penh, story of a city. His first talk in November sold out so we're delighted to have him visiting again.

With a special focus on the relationship between architecture and history, Jean-Michel will explore Phnom Penh’s incredible story from its founding, through French colonialism, the optimism of independence, the New Khmer architecture of the 1950s and 1960s, the descent into war and Khmer Rouge terror, and liberation in 1979.

Phnom Penh is just 270kms from Ho Chi Minh City - yet so different historically and culturally.

Corsican born Jean-Michel Filippi is Professor of Khmer Linguistics at the Royal University of Phnom Penh and is a leading scholar of Cambodian languages. He completed his Phd at the Sorbonne in Paris. His decade long fascination with Cambodia reaches into the country’s extraordinary history, art and architecture.

He is the author of the book Strolling around Phnom Penh, and is a passionate speaker. For more infomration of Dr. Jean-Michel, please check out www.kampotmuseum.wordpress.com

We've had the privilege of Jean-Michel on numerous occasions and we're delighted he'll be joining us again next week.
