In this workshop we will look at the works of German Expressionist Karl Schmidt.
His woodblock portraits are generally single colour and use harsh blocks of negative / positive space. We will aim to complete a portrait (either self or of another subject) in a similar style to produce a series of prints collaboratively.
STEP 1 - Drawing/transferring the design to the woodblock
The simplest part! Using charcoal to trace or just pen to draw we will plan out our blocks and determine which areas will be cut-out.
STEP 2 - Cutting
Using a range of tools provided you will learn the use for each different type of tool whilst experimenting with new mark making techniques and electric power carvers.
STEP 3 - Printing
Hand burnishing woodcuts is the process of printing without a press and is what many of the Expressionists relied on. You will learn this process and we guarantee you will get at least one perfect print to take home and frame.
The price of this workshop will be 350k payable on the day and we aim to have around 10 participants. Places are first come first served!
