3x4 (3rd edition) - Opening night @ Noirfoto

Noirfoto would like to introduce the third edition of “The New Photographers” exhibition, our first 3x4 exhibition of the year 2020, featuring independent works from three photographers: Nguyen Quang Bach (Vietnam), Pham Viet Anh Minh (Vietnam) and Adrien Jean (France).

For the first time, all represented collections are taken in Vietnam. Working on the same genres of photography – street and documentary – the three artists bring in divergent points of view, approaches, and spirits which together forms a fascinating and diverse exhibition.

Nguyen Quang Bach captures modern life in context of spiritual tradition in order to convey aspects of culture and subconscious attitude of people; Pham Anh Viet Minh shares his visual diary about a place from his childhood where people are adapting to changes but still reserving sparks of joy, and Adrien brings out minimalism frames from the vibrant city.

‘The New Photographers’ exhibitions are the culmination of the 3X4 Mentorship Programme designed by Pham Tuan Ngoc from Noirfoto and Bach Nam Hai from VG-Lab.

The programme supports and promotes Vietnamese and international artists through the medium and language of photography. It gives devoted photographers the chance to display their artwork professionally in a specialized exhibition.

> Nguyen Quang Bach

Nguyen Quang Bach was born in Hanoi. After finishing the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Video degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2018, he returned to Vietnam to pursue a professional career. He uses photography as a tool to convey a thorough understanding of Vietnamese culture. Since coming back, he has lived in various cities in all three parts of Vietnam in order to study the way people live and build communities. Recently, he pays attention to spiritual traditions, religious practices and people’s subconscious attitudes towards these matters.

> Pham Viet Anh Minh

Minh Pham is a semi-professional photographer, specializing in street and documentary photography. He is fond of studying and experiencing places of memories to archive his thoughts and feelings. Being born and raised in Thanh Da peninsula, Sai Gon, Minh's childhood had revolved around natural habitats and kindness of the neighbourhood. Observing and sensing experiences of change to this homeland has deeply shaped and influenced his body of work. As a nostalgist, longing for affection for the past, Minh uses photography as a language to write his very own diary.

> Adrien Jean

Adrien Jean, a self-taught French photographer, has developed an ever growing passion for the craft since he first set foot in Vietnam in 2014. The streets of Saigon, a place he now proudly calls home, have become his playground for experimentation & inspiration. Exploring the city through his lens has helped him to get a better grasp of the local culture and to connect with people in a deeper way.

Saul Leiter, his favorite photographer, used to say: ‘It’s quite possible that my work represents a search for beauty in the most prosaic and ordinary places’. This philosophy inspires Adrien’s photographic journey and guides his steps on the streets.
