Session 2 - Southern Vietnam as a Center of Modernist Architecture

The vast quantity and quality of Vietnamese modernist buildings constructed throughout southern Vietnam between 1945 and 1975 made Vietnam an unrecognized center of modernism in the world. This presentation recognizes the accomplishment of the Vietnamese people in developing their own modernist architecture that reflects Vietnamese identity based upon their traditional architecture.

Time: Oct 28, 2:00 - 3:30pm

Session 3 - Contemporary Vietnamese Architecture in the Information Age
These are exciting times for architects and the public as architecture moves beyond modernism into the information age. This presentation focuses on the characteristics of this new architecture and shows how Vietnamese architects are leading the world in the design of houses and schools for the new reality of the information age.

Time: Nov 18, 2:00 - 3:30pm

About the speaker: American architect Mel Schenck is a long-term immigrant to Vietnam and has been studying Vietnamese modernist architecture since he was surprised by the extent and quality of this architecture in Saigon when he first lived here in 1971/72. He and photographer Alexandre Garel are the authors of the new book "Southern Vietnamese Modernist Architecture: Mid-Century Vernacular Modernism" published in Hanoi by Thế Giới Publishers.
