California Dreaming @ A. Farm Studios

Take a trip back to the Vietnamese sounds and images of the 1980s and 90s with guest artist Dan Nguyen (Demonslayer) and A. Farm artist-in-residency Bert Ackley.

Dan Nguyen (Demonslayer) is music producer, DJ and visual artist who has been unearthing obscure relics and archiving the sights and sounds of Vietnamese New Wave (Vwave), a subculture which flourished amongst the Vietnamese community of Little Saigon in Orange County, California in the 1980s-90s.

The open studio will mark the opening of the exhibition California Dreaming: the nearly forgotten subculture of Vietnamese New Wave 1980s-90s from Little Saigon, California.

Rare photos, visually stunning cassettes and treasured VHS rips are digitized and scanned; marking them safe from being lost forever to the hands of time. A mini artbook will be available at the exhibition, containing rare imagery from Dan’s personal collection of cassettes, VHS screen caps and more.

A. Farm artist-in-residency Bert Ackley will show the work in progress of his ongoing Vinatapes project, which archives Vietnamese media, focusing on home videos recorded on analog camcorders. He prepares his visual work using media and gear found at junk markets and uses CRT TVs and a 1990s video mixer to provide a base for various types of feedback effects combined with different input sources.
