From an award-winning novel by the Ministry of Defense to a deeply humanistic stage play, “If You Live” is the culmination of director-screenwriter Viet Linh's heartfelt journey.
In 1995, director Viet Linh encountered “If You Live”, a novel by Van Le, and was deeply captivated by its unique setting and profound humanity. Although deemed “excellent but difficult to adapt,” she wrote the screenplay in 1999. This script won the top prize at the National Screenplay Competition in 2007 but was never produced.
Determined not to let this valuable work fade into obscurity, director Viet Linh decided to bring the story to life on stage - marking the first war-themed play by the Hong Hac troupe.
Set in an imagined afterlife and revolving around a young soldier who sacrifices his life on the very day the war ends, If You Live is steeped in poetic beauty and profound messages about sacrifice, patriotism, and the morality of the Vietnamese people. This play serves as a poignant ballad, portraying the bittersweet glory of a historic era.
