Coffee Cinema: Brokeback Mountain

This September marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Brokeback Mountain, a masterpiece by director Ang Lee. When it premiered in 2005, the film faced ridicule, homophobia, and strong backlash across the United States. At that time, those who went to see the film in theaters often had to “look over their shoulders,” afraid of being suspected as gay.

Over the past 20 years, much has changed. Queer artists and same-sex love have become more visible in culture. Films portraying same-sex relationships are no longer rare. Yet Brokeback Mountain remains something truly unique.

The film won many prestigious awards, including the Golden Lion at the 2005 Venice Film Festival, the 2006 Oscars for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score, as well as the 2006 Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Screenplay, and Best Original Song.
