In the lunar year Kỷ Mùi (1679), in the fifth month, fleets of Chinese refugees loyal to the Ming Dynasty (“Phản Thanh Phục Minh”) arrived in Southern Vietnam. A century later, after the Tây Sơn wars, their descendants gathered along the banks of the Tàu Hũ canal and built a bustling settlement, which we now know as Chợ Lớn. Since then, generations of Chinese immigrants have continued to arrive, establish livelihoods, trade, and settle, leaving a deep imprint on the culture and beliefs of the people of Gia Định and the wider Southern region.
